Dead of the Day: 09-29-1969

Cafe au Go-Go

New York, New York

The show from this date in 1994 is easily one of the best of that year. But for our Dead of the Day, we go back to the 1969 show at the Cafe au Go-Go in New York City. Though the 45+ year-old audience recording is rough, there is some stellar music on it, including one of only two versions of The Seven that the band ever played. Doin’ That Rag opens the show, and, like the rest of the playing this evening, the band romps through with incredible energy. Sadly, the tune is clipped at the end and the vocals in the mix are atrocious, but there is still a verve and force that is simply magnificent. After that, The Seven comes out, streaking forward with nervous, psychedelic vitality. In 7/8ths time, the Seven is akin to The Eleven and its eponymous time signature, though a beast all its own. Sounding a bit like Lovelight at times, it is a real shame The Seven never made the regular rotation. They had played it a few times in October 1968, but all as Mickey and the Heartbreakers, without Bobby and Pigpen. Some claim a much shorter version of it came out again on March 21st 1970 on the last night of a run at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, New York. But this seems to us to be the last real version. Here, The Seven drops right into Good Lovin’, which is just as heavy as the rest of the set with a killer drum solo in the middle of it. From there, the boys turn to Stephen, which, though clearly very hot, is probably the song that suffers the most from the sound quality of the recording. Still, the band rocks through it and then heads off into The Eleven, just tearing it to shreds between Jerry’s incredible guitar and the crashing drums. It is a marred recording of a show like this that has so much promise that really makes you want to fire up the old time machine and head back to see the Dead during their primal stage.

Me, too. This site is rocking’, in many ways. Even on the days I don’t listen to the music, it’s still fun to come here and find out which show is featured.

Could only wonder if this band would have been able to show up at Woodstock a month earlier and blew the doors off that mother?……..
