China Cat kicks off the second half with some bright Jerry licks and nice additions from Brent. And, of course, a righteous Rider follows on China Cat’s heels. There are some heady drops from Phil and more strong work from Jerry, who gets cut off mid-run at one point when Bobby comes in early on vocals. After that great opening to the set, Brent rolls out a powerful Blow Away. Unfortunately, some equipment issues then lead to a lengthy break, but the Dead pick things right back up afterwards with an exploratory Playin’ that has Jerry going all-in on the MIDI in the latter half. And he continues to make use of the MIDI – though there are also brilliant pure guitar stretches – in the elegant Terrapin that follows. Eventually, Billy and Mickey take over completely for a relatively short Drums. Towards the end of Space, Jerry starts throwing down a few raging licks, eventually leading the band into Miracle. And after Miracle winds down, the boys noodle around before Jerry gets to the mic and breaks out Death Don’t Have No Mercy after 19 years on the shelf. The crowd rightly goes nuts, and, after Bobby takes the second verse, Jerry absolutely shreds, setting off a mind-blowing jam, leading to Brent coming in with his own passionate vocals. Sugar Mags then breaks forth, providing some sort of joyous absolution in the wake of that tremendous Death Don’t Have No Mercy. A Mighty Quinn encore finally puts a cap on the night at Shoreline.
