Great Western Forum

Inglewood, California

Bobby’s spirited vocals highlight the opening Hell In A Bucket before a long, powerful jam kicks off three minutes in. Afterwards, Bruce Hornsby joins the band on accordion, his fifth time as a guest with the Dead. Unlike previous times where Bruce had only played a couple songs, here Bruce pops in and out throughout the night, eventually contributing on eight tunes. Here on Sugaree, his accordion adds atmosphere and a little more luster to the jammy interludes. Following that, Brent takes center stage for a heartfelt We Can’t Run. People might complain about the overt nature of the lyrics, but Brent means business! Bobby then delivers a solid Masterpiece before Jerry’s soaring jams in Loser. Victim Or The Crime is big and bold with Jerry and the boys creating rich soundscape before the drummers conjure an ethereal quality that sends the tune into discordant spacey territory. The band just barely holds onto the theme in the midst of this spectral chaos before charging back into the Victim mainstem for one more turn. Spencer Davis, along with Hornsby, then comes out for CC Rider and I’m A Man to end the set. Clearly, Davis brings some energy and his deep English rhythm and blues vibe.

Jack Straw kicks off the second half. And Hornsby stays on keys for the first four tunes, his more plaintive piano harmonizing with Brent’s bigger keyboard sound. And nowhere is this more clear on the China Cat as Bruce’s keys supercharge Brent’s run in the midst of the heady transition into I Know You Rider. And then it is a super fun Man Smart Woman Smarter before an inventive and thrilling Drums. The Wheel slowly congeals out of an incongruent Space, like a beautiful dawn after a stormy night. But the crowd was waiting on a Dark Star, which the Dead broke out at the Warlocks show in Hampton two months back. The band had played it three times out on the East Coast, but Dark Star hadn’t been seen elsewhere since 1984. For its part, the Wheel delivers and ends up charging into Miracle, where Bobby cheeses and the crowd eats it up. The band plays a downright bluesy version of the song before they wander through a lovely opening to Stella. And the Stella becomes particularly poignant and reflective, punctuated by short, dark and guilt-ridden jams. After the Stella, Hornsby again comes in on keys, and Bobby returns to full on cheese-mode for Good Lovin’ to close the set out. Hornsby then moves to the accordion for the encore, which is a magnificent version of Dylan’s Baby Blue, Jerry just squeezing everything out of the solos.
