Dead of the Day: 12-27-1981
Oakland Auditorium Arena
Oakland, California
There are some great shows on this day in Dead history – just check out ’70, ’77, and ’89 if you are in doubt – but we turn to a fabulous Brent-heavy, Jerry-infused, and Bobby-cheesing 1981 night for our Dead of the Day. Minglewood opens the show in fine form, heading into a scrumptious Sugaree. The jam about two-thirds of the way through builds and builds, eventually coming to a crescendo that elicits an outpouring of joyful noise from the crowd that can even be heard on this soundboard recording. The Cassidy that comes out next certainly has its moments, as the boys come together for some sweet playing. But the Deep Elem that follows it is even better as Jerry lights up the rare electric version. A song later, the Friend Of The Devil does its all to equal the Deep Elem with beautiful cascading guitar work tumbling and combining with Brent’s organ. Passenger is another one of those top-notch, second to none versions that seems to come out nearly every other tune during this show. This Passenger – the last ever – has so much energy, yet every note Jerry serves up seems to be perfectly placed. Afterwards, the Althea is very fine, heading into a ridiculous LL Rain. The latter tune is dripping with awesomeness from the tasty Brent runs to Jerry’s licks to Bobby’s barely contained cheese, all combining on a special, special rendition. And, then, as you would expect, the set-ending Deal is hot.
Out of the break the boys start off with, as Bobby says, “a spiritual number,” in Samson And Delilah. While Brent had been dealing in the first set, he absolutely explodes on this one, sending out sick runs that seem to goad Jerry into a few scorchers of his own. Following that, the boys switch gears, heading into a slow and luscious To Lay Me Down. Then a inimitable Playin’ comes out that has to be one of the best of the era as Bobby sing-jams in rhapsodic fashion, creating a fade effect between him and Jerry at one point that is truly unique. Later in the jam, the boys continue to dish out some funky, heady music that roils and sizzles until the drummers take it all over for themselves. On the flip side, The Wheel slowly gains momentum out of a lengthy Space, eventually steamrolling forward, before dropping back into some spacier exploration of the theme. And this, too, finally gives way to a quick return to Playin’. Then the band comes around to a stellar Wharf Rat before unleashing a rocking Sugar Mags closer. But the boys send everyone away with one more masterpiece in the Baby Blue encore.
