This is a partial soundboard of what sounds like an interesting night. Chimpanzees supposedly were on the stage – either during the New Riders set or just before the Dead – and Jerry himself may have let a couple hundred people in who did not have tickets. It would be great to hear the full story of the evening and get the complete soundboard.

Caveat: –this is a degraded multi-generation sbd Notes: –splice during Drums; presumably several minutes are missing –minor splice at 2:46 during first verse of Other One Comments from deadlists: –Before That’s It For The Other One DeadBase IX lists Casey Jones, Candyman, Mama Tried, Easy Wind, Saint Stephen; and following Cosmic Charlie it lists Uncle John’s Band. There was also a NPRS set. A 90 minute AUD tape from this show has been rumored for years but never turns up; probably it is a list mirage based on the SBD and does not exist. Ned Lagin says this show was the first time he performed with the Dead, but that he wasn’t plugged into the PA.

I was at that show with my friend Tom McKenna who was a freshman at B.U. He asked if I wanted to come up to see this great band. Tom was our music guru at the time. He said that we’d seen them at Woodstock during the summer. I didn’t really remember them from there. There were either 3 or 4 of and Tom told us when we got there that no tickets were available. He said no sweat, we can get in the back door. And lead us the back parking lot to wait? Waiting in back lot and car comes in and stops. Guy gets out of passenger side of car. Tom yells “hey Gerry”. Guy stops – looks at us. When gets to the door they open it to let him in. He spreads the door wide open with his back to the door. Arms spread and holds it wide open. Quick whispers as we sprint to the door- split when we hit the door. We can gather together later inside. Racing through the door and my friend Ned bumps into a guy just inside and says “hi Phil” – we ask later – “Phil who”? Leash. Meant nothing at the time, not til later when I followed them. Port Chester circa 1971 or 1972. Aforementioned friend Tom, as I look at the stage is sitting on a pile of guitar cases and the like behind Pigpen playing the organ on the left side of stage as you look at it. Shortly thereafter Tom is at my elbow in the crowd and says “follow me” and off we go to door at the left side of stage. Me and Tom then sitting behind Pigpen for rest of concert looking out at the crowd from same vantage point as Pigpen. Tom at 6’5” with long wildly curly hair had the ability to disappear to people and get wherever he wanted to. Saw them a number of times, probably 15 to 20. Lots of fun. JimD

I too attended this cozy gig at the vintage gym with pull out bleachers,one whole section of which was the Dead “family”.I can verify the Jerry “let them in ” story because I was standing next to him when fans started to bang on the doors and he told the “security” guys to open them up and let ’em in.great show from the “pre-Arena era…
