Dead of the Day: 10-28-1985

Fox Theater

Atlanta, Georgia

Our Dead of the Day takes us out to the high class Fox Theater in Atlanta, Georgia back in 1985. The Jerry songs in the first set are all excellent: Sugaree, Peggy-O, Ramble On Rose, and Row Jimmy. The Peggy-O in particular is really divine. On that one, Jerry provides some wonderful, spare picking, Brent serves up some lovely runs, and Bobby is dialed in, playing off Jerry’s leads. Bobby’s playing on Peggy-O is no fluke; he is on throughout the evening. On his side of things, he starts off by going with the first-ever Kansas City with the Royals having just won the World Series. Then, after that Peggy-O, Bobby flubs some lyrics on Esau, but that is the only thing bringing down this fantastic version. The Cassidy is bright, and the Promised Land rocks the set out. The second half opens with Scarlet Begonias, which is hot in itself, but transitions illustriously into Touch Of Grey. The Women Are Smarter that comes out next is well-played and a lot of fun with Bobby and Brent building on each other musically and vocally. Then we get a Terrapin Station, which, as always, is quite a trip. Post-Space, the Stella is absolutely magisterial.

Notes:
SBD mix fluctuations in Sugaree for the first 4 minutes. The levels were increased 6 dB for the first 23 seconds because they were way too low. Some additional slight level adjustments to songs in the first set to maintain consistency. This matrix required a little more EQ initially to be similar to the 10/29 matrix sound. The same EQ settings as 10/29 could be used beginning with Promised Land. Some trimming of the longer tuning sections to maintain flow. Doug Oade’s audience recording patches the majority of breaks between songs in Lamarre’s AUD source (#128757 via Jim Wise and Droncit, 5/19/14).

Just want to say thanks for this site. I don’t listen every day and I don’t comment every day, but I do check this out every day. Really appreciate your time and effort.
