Dead of the Day: 10-20-1968
Greek Theater, University of California
Berkeley, California
Our Dead of the Day gives us a shot of unadulterated primal Dead from the Greek back in ’68. Schoolgirl opens it, and Phil is very high in the mix, but that just lets us appreciate his thick bass line that much more. Pig is obviously back after his absence over the previous week or two as he cared for his girlfriend, and he is on. There is also a fine, ferocious and just a little psychedelic jam about three quarters of the way through. Then, we get some fun banter before the boys break out Lovelight, which includes some Pig rapping and the illustrious sound of Jerry’s sweet guitar licks, cracking like lightning across the scene. But as good as those opening songs are, things are only getting started as the band builds into an essential Dark Star, which is spasmodic and tempestuous before turning into a barely contained beast before the final verse. From there, the boys segue into Stephen, which awakens with a start, galloping forth at breakneck speed. Then an acid-laced, mind altering Eleven shoots out in all it transcendental immaculateness. How anyone could keep it together by this point is anyone’s guess as the band – especially Jerry – just does not let up. And there was no succor to be found as the boys rolled right into a smoking, steamrolling, face-melting Caution that will have you, now fifty years later, holding on for dear life. Finally, the Caution descends into a righteous Feedback Jam to close out the show. Words cannot do this one justice; just give it a listen.
