Dead of the Day: 10-07-1977

University Arena, University of New Mexico

Albuquerque, New Mexico

Unfortunately, we only have a partial soundboard from the second set of our Dead of the Day, a homecoming concert at the University of New Mexico back in 1977. But what is here is inventive, fun, and, at times, absolutely amazing. The recording opens with a lengthy, second-set Ramble On Rose, which, though quite good, is probably the weakest piece on the tape. From there, the boys head into a ripping Passenger. After that, there is a monstrous Terrapin, a musical masterpiece marred only by some issues with the vocals. Eventually, the Terrapin segues into Playin’, which is tight and well-played, but lacking the deep jamming that characterizes the best versions of the tune. Moreover, Donna’s shrieks mar it too, unless, of course, you are into that. From there, the drummers take over, serving up a mesmerizing Drums that drops immediately into Iko. From Iko, they take it into a silky smooth Wheel, which builds slowly after the transition. Here, Donna adds a reserved vocal complement while Bobby’s guitar provides a luscious musical backdrop. The Wharf Rat, surely one of the best ever, is resplendent before hitting on a magnificent jam through the middle section and again at the end, driven by Jerry but with Phil laying some thumping bass. The Sugar Mags that follows is a little more subdued than most versions, but Jerry’s guitar is so sweet and the rest of the band are in mind-meld form, making for a terrific version.

The Dead also played homecoming at Colgate on 11/4/77. I was there and Weir offered a “Happy Homecoming” to the crowd before the terrific Johnny B. Goode encore. Anyone know of any other homecoming gigs?
