Dead of the Day: 10-03-1987
Shoreline Amphitheater
Mountain View, California
Our Dead of the Day has the Dead back on the West Coast for the second night of their run at Shoreline after the eastern turn of their fall tour in ’87. From the very beginning, at least two things are clear: first, that the boys are having a great deal of fun and, second, that Brent is absolutely throwing down on the keys. While everyone is playing wonderfully, Brent’s keys rise above, continually pushing the jams and providing impeccable fills. With the Hey Pocky Way opener, the boys bring some excitement, playing it for just the fifth time. From there, a scorching Minglewood bursts forth, followed up by a tasty Candyman that just soars on the wings of Jerry’s guitar, especially in the latter half. Later in the strong set, Bobby sends up the last Brother Esau ever. But it is the Bird Song that comes next that is the highlight of the first half. Everyone is on the same page throughout, offering up layers of sonic magic.

Maggie’s Farm-> Cumberland Blues, Looks Like Rain, Terrapin Station-> Drums-> Jam-> The Other One-> Stella Blue-> Throwing Stones-> Turn On Your Love Light, E: The Mighty Quinn
Final My Brother Esau, “Addams Family” tuning before “Masterpiece”
The second set kicks off with a spunky Maggie’s Farm, introduced by violin samples coming from either Jerry’s MIDI or Brent’s keyboard. The feisty Maggie’s heads right into a similarly scorching Cumberland. From there, we get a fantastic pairing of Looks Like Rain and Terrapin, on which Jerry unleashes. The jam at the end is a little foreshortened compared to other Terrapin> Drums, but it is still powerful and otherworldly. Out of Space, a short Other One leads into an epic, utterly enchanting Stella Blue. Throwing Stones> Lovelight finishes off the set, but an immensely fun Quinn puts the cap on the evening with Brent continuing, as he did throughout the show, to deliver on the keys.
