Pig entered the hospital in August 1971, with serious medical issues stemming from a rare autoimmune disease and his heavy drinking. To protect his health, doctors recommended that he stop touring. While Pig would rejoin the band on stage in December, the gravity of the situation forced the rest of the members to finally take action. And, right at that moment, Keith and Donna introduced themselves to Jerry when Garcia was playing at the Keystone. Actually, Donna explained that she “grabbed him and said, ‘Jerry, my husband and I have something very important to talk to you about.’” A bit later, Donna told Jerry the critical information, that “Keith’s your piano player, so I want your home telephone number so I can call you up and come to the next Grateful Dead practice.”

This is the second earliest extant recording of Keith playing with the Dead. But even the session from yesterday, which is the first tape of Keith with the band, is almost certainly not the first session that, incredibly, occurred about a week after Donna first accosted Jerry. According to reports, that initial tryout, rehearsal, or whatever it was began with just Jerry and Keith before Jerry got Billy to come over and join them on drums. On the tape we have here, Keith, on piano, is holding his own, and the band is simply playing the tunes rather than working through the music with a new member. A third rehearsal tape, from October 1, also circulates.
