Dead of the Day: 09-23-1972
The Palace Theater
Waterbury, Connecticut
Our Dead of the Day takes us back to the fall tour in 1972, when the Dead were beginning to form their characteristic ’73 sound with a massive setlist, incredibly well-played music, and a few soaring, fully jammed out masterpieces. The first set really epitomizes the craftsmanship that the Dead were delivering at this point in time, ending with a smoking Deal into an otherworldly Playin’. And while the first set is brilliant, there is still more energy in the second. The Promised Land opener is brimming with it right up until the point that they drop into a sharp Bertha. But the Greatest Story Ever Told goes even further as Jerry rips into an incredible jam and Bobby lays in some hot licks of his own. The Brown Eyed Women that comes next is a lovely, sharp version of the familiar tune. Then, a song later, the boys do an intense version of Dylan’s It’s All Over Now Baby Blue. And after that, the crux of the show comes up, the only Other One suite (sans the closing Cryptical) of 1972, and the last one they would play until 1985. With Billy thumping away, Jerry seesaws through Cryptical with more than a bit of help from Keith and Phil, before a fairly long – at over three minutes – Other One drum solo. Then they all come storming out for The Other One proper, rolling through tons of masterful jamming, coming back into the theme halfway through, and then noodling into space and frantically clawing through the swampy madness in brilliant fashion. Finally, they rise up and deliver one more smoking run through the theme before heading into a very fine Wharf Rat. Just after that, twenty-one beats kicks off the Beat It On Down The Line, which leads into a bright Ramble On Rose. Then things kick up a couple notches again as the boys take it out in rocking form through Sugar Mags, Going Down The Road Feeling Bad> Not Fade Away. All told, this is a rocking show.
