Dead of the Day: 09-18-1987
Madison Square Garden
New York, New York
For our Dead of the Day, we look to one of the best shows of 1987, at Madison Square Garden. The show opens up with a spunky Hell In A Bucket that segues into Sugaree, where the band sounds palpably excited, settling into a mind-meld state that will continue for the rest of the evening. Whatever you might say about the Dead in the late 80s, they could get locked into one another and just groove like nothing else, and that is exactly what happens on this night. And as that happens, each song rolls out, just as splendid as the last, until they come to the tremendous Bird Song that closes out the set. The Bird Song rises above the inimitable magic of the earlier tunes, pouring forth in ridiculous splendor.
Out of the break, the boys bring out a funky, bomb-heavy Shakedown that fills the Garden, sends the crowd into a frenzy, and manages to reach some scintillating territory in the second half. Man Smart, Woman Smarter and Terrapin roll out next, mixing upbeat, bone-shaking music with the transitory journey of Terrapin. The boys then come out of Drums> Space with a rolling and churning version of Goin’ Down The Road Feeling Bad, before sidling into a very fine Watchtower with Bobby taking it over the top on the vocals. But the highlight of the entire show is the monumental Morning Dew, which – heresy of heresy – might just rival the great one from Cornell in ’77. From the first notes to the very end, it is a spectacular journey. Afterwards, the Dead see out the set with one of only four Good Lovin’> La Bamba> Good Lovin’ sandwiches the Dead ever played. It provides some added interest to the late-80s, Bobby-driven Good Lovin’s. And, in all truth, the La Bamba is a hell of a lot of fun. Finally, a memorable Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door puts the cap on a tremendous, inventive 1987 show.
