Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center

Oakland, California

Mickey’s 1985 birthday bash kicks off with a soaring Half Step, followed by a five-alarm Minglewood. Friend of the Devil slows the pace down, but it is no less searing with Brent’s keys complimenting Jerry’s guitar and vocals. Afterwards, a BIODTL takes it into Promised Land. Next, after forty-two beats (a record, we believe) comes a shuffling BIODTL, rocking as always, followed by a great Promised Land and Tennessee Jed. An exploratory and ferocious Let It Grow maintains the momentum, and a real scorcher of a Deal caps the set.

The boys bring things back with a sweet Touch of Grey, followed by its album-mate, Hell in a Bucket. Terrapin then comes out, pleasantly disrupting the run of future In The Dark tunes. Jerry’s ragged yet sonorous vocals, his brilliant guitar, and the rest of the boys efforts combine in a ragged elegance. A funky and fun Man Smart, Woman Smarter follows, getting everyone rocking right into Drums and Space. Gimme Some Lovin’ sort of stumbles out of the end of Space. But once they boys find their footing and coalesce – Brent’s rich fills add to Phil’s bass line – they deliver a solid version. Jerry then slows things back down once again with a gorgeous Stella Blue before a classic Bobby-led rendition of Good Lovin’ ends it in regulation. A final US Blues encore sends everyone home with a smile on their face.
