It’s Mickey’s birthday – his 39th – and the band puts on quite the blowout celebration. The Scarlet> Fire that opens the second set is the gleaming gem of the night, but there is so much goodness here, starting with the sick Minglewood opener. They Love Each Other, the feisty Big River – just listen to Jerry and Brent – and estimable Dupree’s are other first set highlights. But it is the Let It Grow at the end that really takes the early going. Frenetic and mesmerizing, it is a true masterpiece.

As we mentioned, Scarlet Begonias kicks off the second set, all bright and robust before going into a fecund and lengthy jam that winds its way (more cowbell?), as you might expect, to Fire On The Mountain. And the Fire On The Mountain is just as emotive and powerful as Scarlet as Jerry, Brent, and Bobby put on a clinic. The only knock might be the abrupt end to Fire On The Mountain. But the quiet noodling afterwards births a Lost Sailor, the music rising and falling righteously before a subtle change takes it into a charging Saint Of Circumstance. The middle of Saint includes a masterful drum-centered interlude before charging back into the meat of the song. At the end, Jerry throws down a few power chords that then dissolve into the beginning of Terrapin. Here, Jerry’s vocals are crisp, and his guitar licks are rich and bold as he lucidly shreds before the drummers completely take over. A rocking Truckin’ takes it out of Space with Bobby giving us the sex change lyrics. And then there is a magnificent – ain’t they all – Stella Blue. A double-shot of Around And Around and One More Saturday Night finish off the regular session before a lovely, spacious cover of Dylan’s It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue encore caps the entire evening.
