09-09-1974

Alexandra Palace

London, England

On this day in 1974, the Dead began their brief Europe ’74 tour, a 12-day, seven-show, four-venue, and three-country affair. After the music they had been putting up throughout the spring and summer, the Dead seemed poised to storm the continent like they had two years prior. But while there are some utterly mind-blowing moments on the tour, on the whole, the tour was sub-par.

It is no secret that numerous things plagued the band at this point, leading to the mid-70s hiatus that began just a month later. Financial burdens from the sound system and ballooning crew and family put huge stresses on the operation. Playing in larger venues, the boys felt increasingly isolated from the public and found it tougher to continue to innovate musically. And cocaine use amongst the band and crew had exploded, causing a host of issues. All of this was amplified in Europe, especially since the promoter fueled the entourage with massive amounts of coke and other drugs.

This opening night of the tour is definitely not the best of the trip to Europe. That designation should, arguably, be bestowed on the 18th at the Exposition Park in Dijon, France. But it is also not the worst. The Truckin’> Jam is positively face-stealing, reaching some epic heights. And there are some lovely other renditions here, including the Playin’ and Scarlet. On the whole, though, the night is uneven – within songs at times – and subdued. Perhaps the boys were just getting the flavor of the Ally Pally, however, as they would go on to deliver two stronger shows the next two nights – the tenth and eleventh – as they closed out the stand. And when it really comes down to it, the music is still incredibly enjoyable, far beyond merely listenable. But don’t trust us, give it a whirl and decide for yourself.
