Dead of the Day: 09-08-1973

Nassau Coliseum

Uniondale, New York

Our Dead of the Day comes from the second night of a two-night run at Nassau Coliseum back in ’73. Bertha gets the show rolling with Phil way up in the mix early on. A song later, a mellow, pregnant, and, at the same time piercing Sugaree really gets things started. As the first set goes on, it becomes more and more apparent that Bobby is on fire this evening. By the Tennessee Jed, he is throwing in tasty runs right alongside Jerry. In the Looks Like Rain that follows, Bobby commands the vocals, but never really takes over on guitar. He does, however, play with a resonant sweetness that sets off Jerry’s soaring and relaxed jams, which are marred only by the tape cut. Up next, Brown Eyed Women, Jack Straw, and Row Jimmy are all superb. And then the first full Weather Report Suite comes on the scene. From the Prelude through the Let It Grow, it is absolutely sublime. Following that, they bust out a Roll Out The Barrel that is surreal, especially as it comes right in the middle of that awesome Let It Grow and a tasty first-set Eyes of the World. After the tremendous Eyes, the early going finishes off in splendid fashion with a moving China Doll. Out of the break, the band comes out with Greatest Story Ever Told. Greatest Story and the two tunes that follow – Ramble On Rose and Big River – are all excellent, but things get interesting with the first Sing Your Blues Away – Keith’s only composition for the band – as Donna and the boys screw up the song so badly it is almost comical. But then they come out with a scorching China> Rider, making up for it completely. From there, a short El Paso takes us to a phenomenal He’s Gone; undoubtedly, Pigpen, who would have been twenty-eight on this day, was on the minds of everyone as the band came together for the awesome and moving rendition. Afterwards they head right into Truckin’, coming back, probably with Pig still on their mind, to the autobiographical song about their life together on the road, jamming it to the hilt. Next Billy’s drums lead the rest of the Dead into Not Fade Away, storming through it and, with a simple drumroll, into Going Down The Road Feeling Bad. Tumbling and rocking along, they finally head back to NFA by way of the cymbals to end the set. But the band comes back out for a killer Stella Blue, erupting into One More Saturday Night to send the night out on a tear.

Switched back to the audience as the timing reference with He’s Gone. 23) Between I Know You Rider and El Paso, 1 minute and 50.286 seconds were missing from the soundboard and were added from the audience. 24) About 1 minutes into El Paso, 7.393 seconds were missing from the audience and were added from the soundboard. 25) To end disc 2 and between El Paso and He’s Gone, 1 minute and 37.995 seconds were missing from the soundboard and were added from the audience. A friend once made the claim the Dead never played a bad song. Someone proposed the exception would be “Money, Money.” I think an argument could be made for “Let Me Sing Your Blues Away.” Although, for the pure cheeses factor, I do like the line “Only two things I love, rock n’ roll and my turtle dove.”
