Family Dog at the Great Highway
San Francisco, California
At the Family Dog, the Dead and Jefferson Airplane got together for a loose jam session in front of an audience. Details are sketchy on this one, as David Gans makes clear in the last track of this Grateful Dead Hour broadcast. But you don’t need the details to enjoy this fun as hell rarity. The highlight of it all is Safari’s Wipe Out. That tune gets started after Jerry asks the audience for a request. When the drummers hear someone call out “Wipe Out,” they charge off after it, followed closely behind by the rest of the boys, including Jerry wailing some Dick Dale style riffs. Enjoy the entire set – including the proto-punk Twist And Shout and Peggy Sue – and just smile at the idea that this little jam session went down.
