Dance Hall

Rio Nido, California

The boys open up like Black Sabbath, with a few strong chords and feedback. But they quickly assume their Grateful Dead footing and throw up a massive, throbbing, and totally outrageous Midnight Hour. Pig is positively bawling throughout, repeatedly entreating the crowd – and specific individuals within it – as only he could to get up and dance. “I know what you are here for brother, you are not here to SIT DOWN with you hands in your pocket.” “You know girl, Bobby wants you to dance. And he’ll even dance with you.” If Pig had his way, there would not be a single person who would be heading home alone, and we love him for that. Highlights abound in the rest of the going, but the flow and overall semblance that is so much a part of a mature Dead show – even a show from late ’68 like yesterday’s set at Sky River – is still lacking here. And, at this point in their development, it is utterly clear that Pig is the star, from his vocals on Schoolgirl and Big Boss Man to his fronting on Midnight Hour to his ethereal organ on Viola Lee. That does not mean that Jerry and the rest of the band do not bring it, but Pig has a certain bluesman-Hells Angels-frontman presence that gives the listener something to hold onto in the cacophony of the Dead’s acid-drenched adolescence. But with all that said, let us make one thing perfectly clear, you will enjoy the shit out of listening to this primal piece of magic from the boys.

You might also want to check out the recording from tomorrow’s ’67 show, which is likely the end to this set rather than a whole different ball of wax.

One of the most beautiful shows I’ve ever heard.

The Viola Lee from this show is transcendent and visionary. There are moments where, if you dropped in without context, you might guess you were listening to Sonic Youth.
