All told, the first set on this night is solid but not extraordinary for the era. An upbeat Jack Straw takes it out of the gate – Phil bombing away – before a sweet Big Railroad. And the West LA Fadeaway is a highlight with Jerry lighting it up. But the Let It Grow is the real smoker of the early going, closing out the set on a high note and giving a little inkling of what is to come in the second half.

Just the second Day Job ever opens the second set just as it had the previous day in its debut. A sizzling Samson and Delilah then turns the show up a notch with some brilliant runs by Jerry and Brent. They continue to serve up some juicy solos on the He’s Gone that follows. The song itself is sublime, but the Dead also serve up a lengthy jam after they leave the theme itself. That jam takes it into a brief Drums before the entire band has a little spacey exploration into a steamy Not Fade Away. A stunning and masterfully-played Wharf Rat coms out of the NFA before a classic Sugar Mag ends the set on a high note. A U.S. Blues encore finally puts a cap on the night. Don’t be fooled by the lackluster setlist, this is a great night of music at the Seattle Center.
