Dead of the Day: 08-24-1980

Grand Center

Grand Rapids, Michigan

August 24th had some great shows, including the ’68 show that made up part of Two From The Vault and the 1971 show, part of the Houseboat Tapes and Dick’s Picks 35. But our Dead of the Day from 1980 is the equal of all the August 24th shows. And it is one of those rare shows where the first set may just eclipse the second. Each and every tune in the first half is not only resplendent, but also thoroughly, masterfully jammed out, starting with the Jack Straw opener. Passenger, though, is where the set really takes off. It is hard to believe the Passenger is only five minutes long as the playing gets ridiculously hot with Brent’s keys and Jerry’s guitar driving the beast. Then things slow up with the Peggy-O as it picks its ways into a transcendent jam in the second half, eliciting a loud cheer from the audience. The set does not let up the rest of the way out with a Looks Like Rain and Althea setting up the Let It Grow> Deal that close out the set. The Let It Grow explores and satisfies in a mellow fashion while the Deal takes no prisoners, blasting through some full-on jams.

The second set is no slouch, beginning with the powerful Samson. And the China Cat Sunflower is silky smooth as it heads into a I Know You Rider that surges forward, driving into the nighttime. Post-Space, they rock a Not Fade Away, which ends up settling into Black Peter before Sugar Mags takes it out in raucous fashion. All told, it is a great night.

Like pretty much every version played in 1980 and 1981, the Althea here is just a masterpiece.
