Dead of the Day: 08-20-1983
Frost Amphitheater, Stanford University
Palo Alto, California
We head out to a 1983 show at Stanford for our Dead of the Day. Alabama Getaway, blasting forth, opens the show. Greatest Story Ever Told follows on its heels, keeping the pace going until the boys slow things down with a lovely They Love Each Other. The New Minglewood Blues that comes out next is super hot with a raging jam in the latter half. The boys keep ripping in Bird Song, torching the latter half of the song. Together with the Looks Like Rain that follows, these three tunes make a tour de force in the middle of the set. After two more songs, though, the Dead close out the set with a rocking Deal.
Out of the break, the band comes out with Shakedown Street, busting the funkiness through nearly fifteen minutes. Following that, a sprightly Man Smart, Woman Smarter keeps the dancing going. After a Ship Of Fools, the real treat of the set comes with an Estimated Prophet> Eyes Of The World. The Estimated goes off, ranging off into some other melodies while still, somehow, staying true to the Estimated theme before heading into a very nice Eyes. The Other One that emerges on out of Space is a little restrained, but it heads into a solid Black Peter. Then regulation finishes off with a fun Good Lovin’.
