Dead of the Day: 08-17-1980
Kansas City Municipal Auditorium
Kansas City, Missouri
The 1991 and 1989 shows from this date in Dead history are both quite good, but the 1980 date is a real treat with some very fine highlights. Brent really takes over this show, dominating on the keys through a number of tunes, including adding a tasty angle to Minglewood. Bobby is also in rare form, giving his high-pitched “thank you” after Good Lovin’ and shouting out “polka time” twice in the middle of Mexicali, among other odd behavior. But there are also some excellent versions of songs here as well, though Bobby does flub some vocals (when did that ever bother a Deadhead?). The Sugaree is certainly one of the standouts as Jerry and the rest of the band find a hellishly intense gear in the middle, pushing the jam nearly as far as it can go. The Sugarees from ’80 and ’81 are some of the best the Dead played, and this one is right there. The next two Jerry tunes in the first set – Peggy-O and Friend Of The Devil – are also both superb. Finishing off the first set with Lost Sailor> Saint of Circumstance is a great place for these songs. The combination can be so good, but doesn’t quite belong in their usual second half, pre-Space slot. Here they are able to stand on their own rather than poorly holding together the meat of the second set.
The latter half of the show benefits immensely from the space opened by Sailor> Saint. For instance, the Scarlet> Fire lights up the middle of the second set, torching it into Drums with Billy and Mickey already firing away. And don’t miss that post-Space run out of The Wheel (the first with Brent) into Truckin’ and Wharf Rat. This is just such a fun show.
