Dead of the Day: 08-15-1987

Town Park

Telluride, Colorado

There is a great 1971 show form the Berkeley Community Theater, but our Dead of the Day takes us out to the beautiful mountains of Colorado with an outdoor show at Telluride in 1987. The show opens with a Feel Like a Stranger> Franklin’s Tower that sets the mood for the evening: late eighties lusciousness with Brent’s heady contributions, Bobby’s studied vocals, and Jerry’s guitar setting up most of the high points. The Minglewood that comes next begins in familiar territory, but gets into some intense and moody jams in the latter half. From there, the set rolls on in high fashion, including a ripping Big River out of Me And My Uncle and a special Desolation Row.

Notes:
‘———————————————————————————– Patch fix of shnid 17010 Not a huge fix here – I just patched in the beginning of Scarlet Begonias from the Ladner FOB on archive.org (shnid 8324). The patch source was pitch and volume matched, as well as crossfaded with the SBD. The transition from AUD to SBD is very hard to detect. Nonseekable shns were converted to flac, SBEs were cleaned up using shntool. All edits done in CE Pro. Bill Tetzeli (btet@adelphia.net) 6:27 AM 7/5/2006 ———————————————————————————–

As per usual, the second half is really where it is at, starting with the Scarlet opener with Phil belting out some serious bass lines and Brent throwing in hearty fills. The Fire that comes out next has Jerry blasting away while Brent pounds on the keys with, as you would expect, Phil and the drummers raging the whole way through. After a short pause, the boys head into a lovely Looks Like Rain with Bobby delivering powerful vocals and Jerry hitting just the right balance on the guitar. Eyes Of The World continues the phenomenal playing with, again, Brent and Jerry running away with it during the jams. After Drums and Space, the boys launch into a Miracle that leads them into an incredible late second set Bertha. The Bertha, with all its ramped up energy drops right into a monstrous Morning Dew, almost the polar opposite of the rocking boisterousness of Bertha with its intensity building and crashing repeatedly in solid waves of splendor. One More Saturday Night ends up closing out the set before a wonderful It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue encore takes it away.

Good but fairly typical late ’80’s Dead with a few bright spots. The setlist is strong, eschewing all their worst post-seventies’ tunes. Jerry’s voice is awful, though it would get worse over the years so I suppose that by the standards of the late ’80’s it could be worse. His playing however is fiery and energized, as is the whole band’s. Perhaps sensing that his voice was totally shot that night Jer does inject a lot of spirit and passion into his singing, though unfortunately it only underscores how ragged his vocals were on this night – they just don’t sound very good. The Desolation Row is one of the best I’ve heard with Bobby’s vocals being particularly energetic and Jerry’s guitar work sounding great. The second set jamming is fiery, but always abbreviated. In their prime they would have ridden the energy of the Scarlet->Fire for at least another ten minutes. Bobby hams it up on LLR and the fake thunder effects sound corny, though Jerry’s playing is gorgeous. In their prime the LLR would have featured an extended Jerry solo, here it features an extended bout of Bobby’s not-quite-cutting-it falsetto. The Eyes is pleasant, but really nothing to write home about. Same with the Bertha – it’s energetic, but it’s not really incredible…just a well-played Bertha in an unexpected slot in the show. An excellent Morning Dew and a surprisingly strong Desolation Row are probably the only serious reasons to give this one a listen, though Jerry’s playing throughout is really strong.
