Dead of the Day: 08-07-1982
Alpine Valley Music Theater
East Troy, Wisconsin
The 1982 show from this date is a stunner, one of the best the Dead ever played from any year, and a real gem that is not to be overlooked. The Dead break things open with The Music Never Stopped and craft an unusual transition into Sugaree. The Sugaree itself is high energy and beautifully lucid, but then the band segues back into The Music Never Stopped, playing around with the theme in magnificent fashion for several more minutes, making the whole thing something truly unique. Other first set highlights include a really superb C. C. Rider; Bobby just smokes through the tune and Jerry throws in some blistering runs as well, making for one of the best versions they ever put together. But really, there is not a bad tune in the set, and the Let It Grow that caps it off is simply transcendent.
After the break, the band comes out with a China Cat Sunflower that is anything but ordinary with several tasty jams in the second half, including a hot bit of picking by Jerry that kicks off an outstanding, lengthy transition – just listen to Brent and Jerry bringing it together throughout – into I Know You Rider. Following that amazing treat, the boys rock out a steamy Man Smart, Woman Smarter and then take us through Ship of Fools. After that, the Dead unleash an incredible run of music, starting with a wicked Playin’ In The Band. Bobby takes over most of the work until after the vocals, when suddenly Jerry lights it up, noodling away in mesmerizing fashion, leading the rest of the boys into deep spacey territory, uncovering worlds unknown. Drums> Space takes over from there, heading into dark and haunting realms before The Wheel breaks like the dawn, bringing lightness and joy, a version for the ages. After The Wheel, they head back into Playin’ for a short, rocking run before lighting up an epic Morning Dew, full of energy that comes in crashing waves of emotion, each one more monumental than the next until that last, spine-tingling roar. Afterwards, One More Saturday Night finishes off the set, and a U.S. Blues serves as the encore to a tremendous night of music.
The Dead released this show as Dick’s Picks Vol. 32.
