Deer Creek Amphitheater
Noblesville, Indiana
Back on July 2nd, the Dead kicked off their East Coast summer tour at Sullivan Stadium, capacity sixty thousand. They then powered through the big city venues: the 72k Rich Stadium, 100k JFK Stadium, 80k Giants Stadium, and 50k RFK Stadium. But as the Dead started making their way back west, they made their first-ever stop at Deer Creek, a beautiful new amphitheater with a capacity under twenty-five thousand. Deadheads were ecstatic to finally have a respite from the soulless monstrosities further east. And the Dead deliver a fantastic first set and a killer Truckin’> Smokestack and freaky Close Encounters jam in the second half.
Bertha, Greatest Story Ever Told, Candyman, Walkin’ Blues, Peggy-O, Queen Jane Approximately, We Can Run But We Can’t Hide, Bird Song
Set 2
Foolish Heart, Victim Or The Crime, Crazy Fingers > Truckin’ > Smokestack Lightning > Drums > Jam > China Doll > All Along The Watchtower > Stella Blue > Sugar Magnolia

The Dead storm out of the gate with a full throttle Bertha, capping it with a dozen anymores. Greatest Story Ever Told comes next with Brent adding a few thrilling runs in the midst of a ferocious concluding jam. The band then slows the tempo, delivering a luscious Candyman. The pace picks up again with a heady Walkin’ Blues, Bobby laying in some fantastic rhythm while Jerry shoots off. Peggy-O then takes a moment to get its legs before finishing in solid fashion. The Queen Jane that follows has two rapturous jams before We Can Run with Brent’s typical passionate vocals on the latter tune. An epic Bird Song then unfolds to cap a brilliant set, Brent’s little runs alongside Bobby’s flourishes adding so much while Jerry shape shifts and teleports in an incredible display of mastery and prestidigitation.
The second half takes a little longer to get off the ground than the first did. But everything comes together for a raging Truckin’ that just blasts off in the latter half before the Dead turn on a dime and head off on a sizzling Smokestack Lightning that ends in a tumultuous jam as the band decelerates into Drums. The Close Encounters jam is taken up briefly here and there throughout the MIDI-heavy Space, but fully comes on the scene about 8:20 in. The China Doll that follows is as delicate as ever and soars in places, but Jerry seems a bit confused, particularly before entering the final verse. After a strong Watchtower, Jerry comes back for Stella, which is not perfect, but still stunning and completely free of the challenges he encountered in China Doll. A rocking Sugar Magnolia then completes the set out before a lovely Brokedown Palace encore sends the faithful off to Alpine and the magical three show end to the tour.
