Manor Downs

Austin, Texas

To celebrate America’s Birthday back in 1981, the Dead played another magical night at Manor Downs. The band had not played the venue since fall of 1977, but this night renewed their acquaintance with the place, which became a regular stop for the band as they swung through the South in the early eighties.

A hot Jack Straw gets things going, with the perfect line for Independence Day in Austin. But Bobby flubs the lyric, somehow going to Minglewood’s “It’s T for Texas” rather than “leavin’ Texas.” As the crowd goes wild, Bobby catches himself for “fourth day of July.” We can only hope that the rest of the boys gave him enough shit afterwards. The boys follow the opener with a resplendent Peggy-O, ripe with earthy soloing from Jerry. A few songs later Jerry and Bobby trade blows on a smoking Rooster, kicking the set into a higher gear. A rocking Tennessee Jed, which includes a sweet jam before the final chorus, rolls out next, right into a sick Minglewood. Then, a ferocious China Cat – Brent just going nuts, turning an already hot version into a steamroller – takes it into a soaring Rider to end the set.

Feel Like a Stranger returns us to the action, putting everyone on notice that the energy and fun of the first set was not going anywhere. From there, the band takes us into a lovely Bird Song, weightless and airy, replete with spacious jams. Then the Dead sends us off on a relentless Playin’, everyone taking a turn leading the spaceship before Billy and Mickey finally completely take over into a beastly Drums. A full-on laser space war ensues in the Space that follows before Bobby suddenly leads everyone in the direction of Not Fade Away. As the rest of the boys slowly come along, they don’t leave the funkiness of Space behind, continuing on a mesmerizing ramble that slowly delivers all the force and power that NFA can wield. And then the band segues into the dark and gloomy waterside haunt of Wharf Rat, Jerry sending some beautiful solos throughout. A classic Sugar Mags ends the set before a romping One More Saturday Night encore with Bobby giving us some Fourth of July lyrics.

Beautiful day, outdoors in Austin, second show of the summer tour. Fireworks were a trip during the break. If I remember correctly, there was a battleship firing colors, all made of fireworks. Quite the show! Opened with Jack Straw, “..T for Texas, fourth day out of July,” sings Bobby. Texans were a friendly, fun-loving group. Couldn’t find a motel room after the show so we threw out a bedroll on a grassy piece of ground, not far off the freeway. Told my girlfriend (now/still my wife) to “wake me when the cops get here.” And she did. Luckily, we had selected a place owned by the University of Texas Austin, so it was private property. But the Austin policemen were beyond polite and friendly. After establishing we were not runaways, they bid us good day and good sleeping.
