Saratoga Performing Arts Center
Saratoga Springs, New York
By the time the Dead rolled into Saratoga Springs in 1988, they had already played the august Saratoga Performing Arts Center three times. Their first show, in 1983, was a burner with an epic Morning Dew. And the ’85 Dead show at SPAC was the largest in the venue’s history; just over 40,000 Heads came into the amphitheater that now caps attendance at 25,103. Things were so crazy that time around that Bobby had to yell at people to stop hanging from the balcony. With the Dead probably on venue probation for the ’85 antics, gate crashers at this ’88 show put an end to the band at SPAC, but not before everyone got to enjoy one more epic show in one of the East Coast’s nicest venues.
The show kicks off with Hell In A Bucket. And the first half unrolls from there in splendid fashion. Bobby plays well throughout the night, and there is so much interplay between Brent and Jerry as they push each other on jam after jam. And while a Victim> Foolish Heart closer might not make anyone’s dream setlist, this one is something special.
Scarlet Begonias opens the second half. And while the song is hot from the beginning, the jam at the end is positively incendiary. The Fire On The Mountain that follows keeps it going, blasting into the stratosphere immediately after the first verse and never looking back. Estimated, with Bobby’s vocals as impassioned as ever, then leads to Crazy Fingers. There, Jerry’s voice is ragged, but his playing makes up for it and more, especially in the enchanting jam that takes it to Drums. Out of Space, Brent takes a short turn on I Will Take You Home before the band launches into Going Down The Road Feeling Bad. And the high energy rocking continues on Miracle. Then, the Dead switch gears, turning to an incredible Stella with a towering, feverish solo. But before anyone can even catch their breath, the band is off on a scorching Not Fade Away. At the end, the audience keeps the NFA chant going right until the boys start tuning for the encore. And at this point, the Dead turn to Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door, delivering a soaring version to close the door on SPAC.
