Dead of the Day: 06-27-1969
Veterans Auditorium
Santa Rosa, California
For our Dead of the Day, we head back to an amazing 1969 summer show where the Dead roll with a country twang, but also bring the psychedelic power you would expect from the era. The show opens with a rare Slewfoot, which is a real treat to hear. The music continues with another new tune for the band, Mama Tried. On this version, the fourth of 297 times they played it, the Dead drive home a serious country sound. But then the Dead lead right into a fine, psychedelic rendition of Dupree’s before coming right back with one of Bobby’s cowboy tunes, Me and My Uncle. Another “new” Dead tune in Casey Jones rolls out next, again just the fourth time played. The boys deliver an extended intro on the song as they continue to feel out just what is possible within the confines of good old Casey Jones. Following that, they head into a Dire Wolf, but with Jerry on pedal steel and Bobby delivering the vocals for another interesting number.
After the Dire Wolf, it is pure, unabashed Dead psychedelia with an excellent Dark Star> St. Stephen> The Eleven. This is about as quintessential a rendering of this trio as you can get, with a focused, yet spacey Dark Star, a driving Stephen, and then a haunting, sing-song, all beatific Eleven. But afterwards the boys snap right back into a folksy Green Grass of Home. They then turn to a Dylan cover, It’s All Over Now Baby Blue, to see the night off. All told, it is an incredible evening of music. And while the powerful Dark Star> Stephen> Eleven is epic, primal Dead, most of the rest of the music shows just how versatile each member of the band could be. The mix also presages the evolution of the band’s sound over the next year as they broadened and refined their music even more with Workingman’s and American Beauty. The ever-changing character of the Dead’s music is always amazing, and this show is just a perfect testament to their wide range and ceaseless transformation.
