Dead of the Day: 06-26-1974

Providence Civic Center

Providence, Rhode Island

Someone says on Archive that “if there is a heaven, the first night there will be this Dead show all over again.” We could not agree more as this show is just so fine from start to finish. The first set, which really hits its stride early with the Scarlet Begonias, has stellar tune after stellar tune. Jerry throws in licks at every opportunity, and the rest of the band just seems to be lightning sweet. There are treats around every corner, but the Weather Report Suite stands out amongst the rest.

Notes:
Notes: The Wall of Sound setup had a tendency to produce a slight metallic reverb in the vocals at times. This effect appears most prominent here during Black-Throated Wind, after a speaker had blown during Scarlet Begonias. The issue gets better during Row Jimmy and more thereafter. The third set vocals are pretty clean. Big River and U.S. Blues have some soundboard mix fluctuations, typical for set openers in ’74. Given U.S. Blues was particularly bad initially, only the AUD plays up to the first chorus. A couple clicks were removed in Half-Step and Eyes. The first 7 seconds of Eyes strangely did not match, indicating one of the sources was subtly patched or there was an unusual cut. Only the SBD plays for this brief moment. The sound on this and the 6/28 matrix is very similar. Jerry Moore’s tapes were ideal for these and blended well. A great pair of shows from the middle of the year, also featured on Dick’s Picks 12. Thank you to all involved!

The second half gets going with a toasty US Blues, and be sure you don’t miss the run in the latter half. A sick – a favorite for best ever – China> Rider comes out a bit later with a scintillating opening jam and a transition that will knock your socks off. But the boys take it up a notch further with the Truckin’> Other One> Spanish Jam> Wharf Rat> Sugar Mags. The only disappointing thing about this run is that the Other One is quite brief, but otherwise this is positively face-melting. And then the Eyes of the World encore is just a perfect thing of beauty, neatly packaged and so tasty.

This band has released this show as Dick’s Picks Vol. 12.

A very memorable show for me… I had worn a “Skull and Roses” mask that I had created the previous Halloween. When we walked behind the stage during the break, there was Jerry, sitting alone. We waved, and when he saw the mask, he exclaimed “Far out!” I think there were more cops than Dead Heads that night. prompting Bobby to announce that “the person next to you might not be your friend.” I was “persuaded” at one point, by one of Providence’s finest, to remove my mask. Who were they expecting, Owsley Stanley?

While the whole show is of course spectacular, high in the running for the best of the year, the China Rider alone is likely my single favorite Dead performance. I have lost count of how many times I’ve listened to it. Jerry’s solos are brain-breaking in their organic, unstructured tonality, like the language of songbirds. The entire band is just so locked in and smooth and free. Not a note is wasted. Happy 50th to this epic set of tunes.
