Dead of the Day: 06-25-1985

Blossom Music Center

Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio

A rare Day Tripper gets the show going. To our ears, the tune is a bit rough, but the folks who were at the show seem to love it. Regardless, it makes for an interesting opening. The boys just seem to gain momentum from there until the Row Jimmy where Jerry, goading on the rest of the band with some sweet runs, ratchets up the action. A song later, the entire band answers the call on Big River, delivering a fiery, nuanced, and well-played version. But it is the very tight Jack Straw that really stands out in the first half.

Whatever the Dead achieved in the first set, they exceeded it and then some in the second. The Gimme Some Lovin’ that opens the action is bass-heavy, rowdy, and almost raunchy; Phil and Bobby lay it on thick. Then we get a neat little China> Rider that you can just tell is setting up something really fine. And that bit of righteousness to follow is a monster Playin’ which jams out into deep-space terrain before the drummers take over and deliver a massive session. From there, Space emerges and takes things onto trippy ground before everyone suddenly coalesces around The Wheel, which is its own nice little nugget. Then an obligatory Playin’ reprise spills out, clearing the way for a top-shelf China Doll. Finally, an almost reserved, but still joyous as all get out, Sugar Mags closes out the set with lots of Healy effects. The Touch encore is also a solid effort that surely sent the fans home thinking about making the trek to Saratoga Springs for the next tour date two days later.

Love this Playing in the Band. About 6 years ago, I listened to over 100 PITB in one week. This was in my top 20
