Dead of the Day: 06-20-1974
The Omni
Atlanta, Georgia
There are several good shows on this day in Dead history, but only one truly awesome one: our Dead of the Day from June 20, 1974. US Blues opens the show, getting everything rolling in fine form. The Beat It On Down the Line that follows is bright and lively with excellent contributions from Keith and nice backup singing by Donna. Brown Eyed Women comes next; Jerry’s guitar is solid throughout, as you would expect, but the interplay between Keith and Bobby is really spectacular here. The set continues to unfold nicely with a beautiful, slow, and fully developed Must Have Been the Roses and a ripping Scarlet Begonias. There is some argument about how good the China Cat Sunflower is, or, for that matter, whether it is good at all. Give it a listen yourself, but we think it is pretty sweet with Jerry laying down some haunting jams between verses while Bobby and Keith keep the theme together. Long before I Know You Rider comes out in earnest, the band is hinting at it, melding China Cat and Rider into a splendiferous auditory resonance. The Rider that follows is a bit short, but has a tasty jam in the middle of it.
The second set begins with Big River, but the segment to really look out for is the Ship of Fools, Truckin’> Eyes> Slipknot!> China Doll. Jerry’s vocals are crisp and mesmerizing on the Ship of Fools. The Truckin’ that comes next is monumental, beginning in standard, even staid, fashion, then launching into a toasty jam, before coming around to some elemental space. Eyes suddenly pops out of the dark recesses, brightly lighting the scene and taking us on an effervescent journey with cascading streams of lusciousness at the end that spills into the first ever Slipknot!, and what a debut it is, full of face-stealing, mind-melting magic. Out of that den of iniquity, China Doll bursts forth, overwhelming in its shear awesome power. A final One More Saturday Night closes the short show – only two hours and twenty minutes – but nobody went home disappointed.
