McArthur Court, University of Oregon

Eugene, Oregon

This is a phenomenally hot show from the great basketball venue at the University of Oregon. The Other One is bright and beautiful, particularly the last Cryptical with Jerry’s magnificent guitar, Billy’s drums, and Phil’s sparse but heavy bass. And then the boys taking it booming right into a sporty Sitting On Top of the World. The Lovelight is another real treat with Pig rapping and balling before a raging, joyous, cacophonous ending. And just a song later, the band launches into one of the very best Dark Stars of ’69. On this moody, ranging version, Jerry who is at the helm the entire time, taking it into deep dark corners of the universe.

We have focused on the jam-heavy face-melters, but the rest of the night is top-shelf stuff too. Don’t miss the Baby Blue (with a beautiful little Ken Babbs rap intro), Friend of Mine, and Hurts Me Too, which are some of the finest versions the boys ever played. And of course, there is Bobby’s Yellow Dog Story with Babbs offering some thoughts as the boys work out their equipment issues.

If it weren’t for this website, I might have never had heard this show before, which is strange because I went to U of O. But thanks to Grateful Dead of the Day, I have stumbled upon what I consider to be among my very favorite Grateful Dead performances of all time.

I don’t think it was at this show, but once I went to a show there and New Riders were playing…I was tapped on the shoulder and turned around to see Jerry who told me to follow him backstage where he turned me on to my second experience with Nitrous. The first time I’d had it was when I was doing lights for the Dead at Springer’s ballroom…Pigpen had called out the light show for being too overenthusiastic and during break Jerry took me back to the U-Haul for my first experience with Nitrous…afterwhich I understood where the band was coming from.
Jerry was a real hero for caring for others experiences and kind beyond measure.
