Dead of the Day: 04-12-1978
Cameron Indoor Stadium
Durham, North Carolina
Our Dead of the Day comes to us from Cameron Indoor Stadium on the campus of Duke University back in 1978. It takes the band a couple tunes to really get rolling; Jerry’s mike is off for a while, and this seems to keep him and everyone else in the band from completely throwing down. But certainly by the time they are four or five tunes in, all is as it should be. For instance, there is such a beautiful rendition of Row Jimmy with heartfelt and resonant vocals by Jerry and the perfect accompaniment by Donna. The band also has some really tasty little jams throughout this tune. Each of the songs in the rest of the first set could arguably be called the best ever. The Minglewood is just out of sight, and the Loser has some sizzling runs. The Lazy Lightining that follows is high energy, but the Supplication is absolutely intense, bursting at the seams with its incredible ferocity.
Jack Straw, Dire Wolf, Beat It On Down The Line, Peggy-O, Mama Tried > Mexicali Blues, Finiculi Finicula, Row Jimmy, Minglewood Blues, Loser, Lazy Lightning > Supplication
Set 2
Bertha > Good Lovin’, It Must Have Been The Roses, Estimated Prophet > Eyes Of The World > Drums > Truckin’ > Wharf Rat > Around & Around
E: U.S. Blues
Duke University
The boys waste no time getting right back at it in the second set with a fine Bertha that segues into an amazing, scintillating Good Lovin’ that just about explodes in its exuberance. The Estimated> Eyes is so good, but is really outclassed by the post-Drums Truckin’> Wharf Rat. From that Row Jimmy onwards, the show is just out of sight. Words cannot possibly do justice to this fabulous show; just give it a listen.
While I believe the recording that we have here was made directly off the soundboard, there are some other near flawless tapes out there that came off a live broadcast by Duke University’s radio station. Jay Serafin relates a story about the broadcast and subsequent donation of the tapes to the Vault on Archive:
This is a little-known “set of factoids” about this show, which is almost always overlooked in the major “publications and set list” of Grateful Dead shows: this concert was simulcast over Duke’s on-campus 50 watt FM radio station! On the date of this concert, the University’s FM station (which was 94.7 MHz at that time) broadcasted it live; it’s low power transmitter allowed it to be received by FM receivers within a 0.5 mile radius of the University grounds (per their FCC license).
Many years later, in May of 1984, Duke University “donated” their RTR copies of this show to the Grateful Dead’s Vault, when the station was undergoing renovation. Almost all of the oldest or “worst condition” equipment was being totally replaced with (at that time) “state of the art eight track cassette decks” and PCM decks; a brand new mixing consoles was designed and built by their engineering department students; and even a small, but very nicely designed, “live studio” was added, where bands could perform a song or two if they were doing interviews (live or for future broadcasts).
Apparently, a Duke student or two associated with the radio station also filmed the night and captured some stills. The image here is from the Duke University Archives. And you can watch the video below. It is wonderful to watch the band on an electrifying night, especially when Jerry starts doing some windmills during Truckin’ and playing the drums with Ramrod. We recommend going to Christopher Hazard’s remastered videos, which are the pair divided into first set and second set.
