On this day, the Dead appeared on the Maze along with Quicksilver Messenger Service and The Wildflowers. Ralph Gleason also interviewed Jerry and Phil, talking about the origin of the Dead’s music and the ways in which the boys’ playing is constantly evolving. At one point, Jerry excitedly proclaims that he wrote Cream Puff War, “The only time I’ve ever written completely all the way, it’s my song.” Jerry begins to express the idea that in writing Cream Puff War, he was really borrowing from what is out there in the universe, making it his own. Or, as Lesh says, it was to the same “extent that all of us, doing our own thing, steal from everywhere.” This recording is a sweet little piece of Grateful Dead history.
