The Pyramid

Memphis, Tennessee

This show at the Pyramid in Memphis is probably best known for the epic breakout of Al Green’s Take Me To The River. Al Green was from Forrest City, Arkansas, more or less just across the Mississippi in Memphis. The Dead’s rendition is somewhere between Al Green’s R&B and The Talking Heads’s new wave spins on the tune. The crowd goes wild for the song, which you can hear on an audience tape; we have a soundboard monitor recording cued up here.
