There is a pretty sweet Scarlet> Fire and Estimated> Eyes, along with the first Far From Me ever, but the highlight of this evening was the U.S. Blues encore with John Belushi. Billy, in his autobiography and here in this interview, explained that Belushi had asked to come on for the encore and was rebuffed by the band, specifically Phil. But, being Belushi, he did not take no for an answer, running on stage and joining the band. As Billy explained in his autobiography:
He had on a sport coat with small American flags stuffed into both of his breast pockets and he landed his last cartwheel just in time to grab a microphone and join in on the chorus. The audience and everyone in the band—except for Phil—ate it up. It couldn’t have been rehearsed better. Belushi had impeccable comedic timing, musicality, balls, the works.
Of course, this was not the first time Belushi had shared a stage with the Dead, as Dan Akroyd and him had opened for the boys at Winterland on New Year’s Eve in 1978.
