Dead of the Day: 03-27-1988

Hampton Coliseum

Hampton, Virginia

The Dead get the crowd up and dancing right from the start with a solid Iko Iko. Then they go into a fiery Little Red Rooster. A bit later, Bobby does his best Dylan impression on a sensational Ballad of a Thin Man. Also in the first set is a five-year breakout of To Lay Me Down, which gets a roar from the audience. The first half finishes off with a solid Let It Grow. All told, the first set is extremely well played with some nice surprises in it. The second set begins in much the same fashion with some spacey noodling before the band teases Miles Davis’s So What, all while the boys wait for Bobby to get his guitar working. With the pink ax strapped on and properly firing, Bobby runs on stage, launching the band straight into a rocking Sugar Mags. From there, the energy stays high with a Scarlet> Fire and Estimated> Eyes that is just as tremendous as you would expect, all in splendid late-80s Dead fashion. The latter half of the set post-Space is good, but does not have the energy or verve of the earlier portion. Still, a fun Going Down the Road and Sunshine Daydream set closer will keep you listening.

The Dead always seemed to play some great shows at Hampton Coliseum. Built in 1970, the venue holds 13,800 for concerts. Over the years, it has been home to a host of minor league hockey teams, the Virginia Squires from the ABA, and Old Dominion University’s basketball team. The Dead ended up playing twenty-one shows, beginning in 1979, there over their career.
