Dead of the Day: 02-24-1974

Winterland Arena

San Francisco, California

Our Dead of the Day, February 24, 1974, from Winterland, is one of those truly special shows where the band is perfectly on and totally in sync; transcendence awaits the listener. From the US Blues opener to the end of the encore, the show is pure ecstasy. If it is even possible for some tunes to rise above the rest, in the first set it has to be the China> Rider and Loser. All three songs are just bliss with the drums majestically keeping time, Phil throwing in some occasional bombs, the vocals perfectly evoking the deep meaning and passion of the lyrics, and Jerry’s guitar haunting it all. In the second set, the magnificent Weather Report Suite and absolutely face-melting Dark Star> Morning Dew somehow manage to surmount the remainder of the incredible set. To try to put words to the ethereal awesomeness of these tunes is just impossible. Just go listen for yourself.

The sound on this recording allows the Dead’s amazing performance to truly sparkle. For instance, the first minute of China Cat is just spectacularly clean, enabling Jerry’s guitar to pierce your very soul. It is a soundboard, so the quality was undoubtedly quite high to begin with. However, the original tapes are now forty years old, and we could expect, at best, some hiss and other irregularities. But this recording is nearly flawless. For that, we have Charlie Miller to thank. Charlie was the long-time soundman for Steve Kimock and is best known in the Dead community for transferring and upgrading hundreds of taped shows. Born and raised on Long Island, Miller saw his first Dead show on the day before his sixteenth birthday, November 2, 1979. Four years later, he began taping at the April 15, 1983, show in Rochester while following the tour. With his vast experience and training, he has an amazing ability to work his magic on these old tapes using various techniques and programs, restoring them to their original beauty, perhaps even improving on the initial taped sound.
