Dead of the Day: 02-21-1991
Oakland Coliseum Arena
Oakland, California
The Dead in the 90s could be inconsistent, but our Dead of the Day, February 21, 1991, is anything but. The show contains some really wonderful playing and a soothing, mellow sound throughout. They bust out of the gate with a spectacular Help> Slip> Franklins that is super sharp and totally jammed out, but also has a pleasantly placid quality. For the most part, the same could be said about the rest of the show. All night, Bobby’s vocals are heartfelt, and Vince delivers really solid keys. Jerry flubs some lyrics, but he throws in some amazing licks along the way. There are some high points in the first set beyond the opening suite, including a Vince dominated Little Red Rooster and a funky Memphis Blues, but the real sweet stuff happens in the latter half of the night. Each song has its own brand of magic, including a monster Terrapin, which the crowd deserved after a full-on tease earlier in the set, and an Eyes out of Space, the last time the band played that combination.
After Brent Mydland died of a drug overdose in July 1990, the Dead tapped Vince to replace him. Along with Vince, Bruce Hornsby, who had previously sat in at several shows, joined the band as a regular member from September 15, 1990 through March 24, 1992, though he did miss 22 shows over that period, including our Dead of the Day. Bruce, on grand piano and accordion, often overshadowed Vince. However, Vince, with or without Bruce, often put in a terrific effort, like during this 1991 night when he adds considerably to the mix with some sparkling, ethereal jams and precise fills.

The Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, now known as O.co for the illustrious Overstock.com, is a multi-purpose stadium built in the 1960s. It is the only stadium in the country that currently serves as the home field for both an NFL (Raiders) and MLB (Athletics) team, at least for the next year or two. There has been talk for some time of replacing the structure, but nothing has come of it despite it being considered the worst baseball stadium in the country. The place is truly quite awful, but that also fosters a certain affection amongst die-hard Athletics fans. For their part, the Dead played an astounding 66 shows at the coliseum in total, making it their most played venue.
