Capitol Theater

Port Chester, New York

This show, the third in the epic six-night run at the Capitol Theater, is a stunner. Arguably, it does not rise to the level of the first two nights. But even that is an unfair comparison given how exceptional those earlier two were. For the second night in a row we have The Other One> Wharf Rat, giving a good workout to the new tune that the boys just busted out on the first night at the Cap. There is also a hot electric Ripple, one of only three the band played, and a smoky Lovelight to cap it all off.

The sound levels on this show (another Betty board) are amazing and really showcase Phil’s vocals and bass. There are lots of highlights but take for example him on Hard to Handle, and Greatest Story, among the other more obvious spots like Other One and NFA. The real performance and recording jewel of this show though is the Lovelight. In addition to the Pigpen rap, there is a jam at about the halfway through that captures everyone’s contribution perfectly. If this isn’t the best show closer song by the Dead, I’m not sure what is, and Betty captures this performance magnificently; complete with the exit music Lay Lady Lay. Oh yeah, and the ultra rare electric version of Ripple is in there too!
