Here we have some interesting outtakes from the recording sessions that brought us Mars Hotel and Terrapin Station. There is nothing all that revelatory here, though one would not expect to find all that much inside a studio session for a band like the Dead who are so defined by their live performances. Still, this recording is interesting to listen to, providing a glimpse into some alternative possibilities for a few of the songs on the albums.

Obviously the outtakes from the Mars Hotel were not from this date, and I am not even sure that the Terrapin recordings are actually from February 17th. However, that is what they are labeled on Archive, and it seems as good of a guess as any.

I have been listening to this set over and over, like it’s a new Dead album. It’s terrific! Love the alternate version of Passenger and really interesting takes on the others. I know Heads hate Money Money, but I’m not ashamed to say I love it! And Pride and Unbroken are both in my top ten all time, even though they are somewhat obscure. Thanks Nugs!
