St. Paul Auditorium

St. Paul, Minnesota

Here we have yet another great February 17th show. The jamming never reaches the stratosphere, but there are some really crisp, finely played versions of some of the tunes.

Bertha Remaster of multi-signature source (shn id 32580)
Notes:
Notes: Digitally Remastered by jashley@deadacated.com. Completed March 7, 2006. There are three distinct signatures in the sources used in the original source. Each can be seen clearly in spectral analysis. A 16khz spike can be seen in two of them, one having a lower B/W of approximately 10khz, and the other have a B/W of appoximately 16khz. The third has the same 16khz B/W but without the 16khz spike. The 16khz spike is, likely, due to CRT Horizontal EMI during the recording process. Each of the three signatures display a different sonic quality, the best being signature #1. Signature #1(16khz B/W No 16khz Spike): Promised Land through Mexicali Blues & El Paso through You Ain’t Woman Enough Signature #2(10khz B/W With 16khz Spike): Bird Song through Stella Blue Signature #3(16khz B/W With 16khz Spike): Here Comes Sunshine through Casey Jones All three singatures were cleaned and processed separately due to the different sonic qualities, and the “Bertha Process” was not applied to signature #2 due to a beating noise caused during processing. All defects from the original remain, including any cuts and drop outs. Enjoy! jay Audio extraction through .flac compression performed by Gary Field 03/21/2006. There are, however, a few problems with the night, not least of all a host of technical issues that result in a few clipped songs and a lot of long pauses between tunes. The Dead were clearly struggling against some demons that were hanging out in their equipment.

I read show reviews and enjoy them. I listen to the Grateful Dead and enjoy Donna. On good nights or bad I have never found her obtrusive. I enjoy what she brought to the band. After she left I did miss her touch. Oh well guess I’m in the minority

I’m with you. I really liked Donna in the band. She had trouble sometimes hearing her voice so she wasn’t always at her best. I thought her solo numbers, like, “From The Heart of Me,” were lovely.

And it cracks me up that people will criticize her voice while thinking Phil could carry a tune.

I don’t know that anyone argues Phil could carry a tune!

What I want to really say is that Donna had a lovely voice. When she could hear herself on stage, she was right on. I was sorry when she left the band, but glad Keith was outta’ there.

Donna was a critical part of the 72-79 Dead sound, and she sounds especially amazing after they ditched the WOS and she could actually hear herself. People love to latch onto the Playin’ wails as proof of her full-time terribleness, while conveniently ignoring the many, many, many moments that the boys (and I say this with love) sound like a flock of howling street cats.
