Studio Rehearsal – Stone House Studio
Novato, California
Here is another interesting rehearsal or recording session. At this point back in 1983, the Dead spent a few days at the Stone House, a large Girl Scout camp where Mickey, Betty Cantor, Rex Jackson, and Dan Healy had recorded Zakir Hussain for his album Venu. What exactly the Dead were doing there – recording an album, working on new material, or simply jamming – is unclear. But we can get a sense of the funky stuff they were playing from these takes of Victory.
As you can hear, Victory is a bit of a sound sculpture, which would have made it a exciting space for the band to explore musically. Unfortunately, we will never know what the boys would have done with it as the tune never made it into the rotation.
